The Alternanthera reineckii is a plant that needs a lot of light. If this is not met, the top of the plant will remain healthy while the lower leaves will perform less well. With sufficient light, the plant will have healthy leaves from top to bottom.
This plant feels best in nutrient-rich substrate with a fine grain, so sand or gravel with a small grain size with a nutrient medium is optimal. The water should be mildly acidic, a pH between 6.1 and 6.9 is optimal, an extreme range is between 6 and 7.3. In nature, this plant is found in gently flowing water, so in the aquarium it must be taken into account that the plant is not directly on the outflow of the filter.
